Policemen investigating at the semi-detached house.
SIBU: A contractor, said to be debt-ridden, is believed to have killed his wife and two children in a case that has shocked this town in Sarawak’s central region.
In the 6am tragedy yesterday, the eldest son, 17, escaped from the double-storey, semi-detached house in Upper Lanang, about 2km from the town centre, by jumping down from his bedroom to the roof of the car porch.
He then climbed over the wooden fence and sought the help of a neighbour.
His father, who fled the home in his car, was picked up in Bintulu last night. He was on the verge of committing suicide when police arrived.
Those killed were the 40-year-old wife, daughter, 14, and son, two.
The girl’s body was found on the bed in the master bedroom while those of her mother and brother were on the floor beside the bed.
It is not clear how they died but it is believed that they were either gassed to death or suffocated.
A source said the elder boy told police that his father had a RM3.5mil debt.
He said the father took his family out to dinner the night before and when they returned home, suggested that they slept together in the master bedroom.
“The father then asked each of them to take some ‘medicine’ so that they could sleep better. But the elder boy did not take the pill,” the source said.
The boy was awoken at 6am by a “hissing” sound and the smell of gas. He asked his father about it but when he did not get an answer, he went back to sleep.
Several hours later, his father hit him on the back of the neck with a stick. The boy told police he then pretended to be sick and asked for medicine.
“Once the father left the room, the boy quickly went out to the balcony. From there, he jumped onto the roof of the car porch and made his way to the ground.
“He scaled the wooden fence and ran across the road to seek help from a neighbour,” the source added.
The furious father shouted at the boy to return home, but he ran on.
The man then drove off in a black Toyota Hilux.
